How Much Horse Power?

As a guide, if you are looking for something more than a big ride on mower, genuine tractors start at around 25 HP. The entry level versions come in 2WD. They are great value for flat, small acreage properties where the main task will be keeping the grass down.

A 25 HP with 4WD and front end loader starts to give you a lot more scope for getting things done around a small farm. You will be able to drive most implements but with a little care and patience because of the modest power.

If you have a medium to larger property, stepping up to a 30 - 40 HP gives you some power in reserve to take on most tasks with a bit more speed. It also enables you to lift more. If you are looking at moving round hay bales you need to be in this HP category to lift with confidence.

After that you are looking at the 50 - 60 HP tractors. This will give you all the power you need and more for the average lifestylefarmer.

Remember as you go up in HP you generally go up in physical size and weight. Make sure the tractor you select will fit through gates and in your shed.

2 Wheel Drive or 4 Wheel Drive?

4WD enables you to put more power to the ground, giving superior and safer performance in steep and slippery conditions.

2WD is only available on smaller tractors such as 25 HP models. 2WD really only has one advantage - cost! If you are on a tight budget and only doing light duty work on flat, dry ground it can be perfectly adequate.

Front End Loader

Front End Loaders are by far the most popular accessory chosen by lifestyle farmers because they let you do so much more with the machine.

4 in 1 buckets are particularly useful as they have the ability to scoop, blade, level as well as grab. It's ideal for shifting all kinds of material from soil, to gravel to garden mulch. Opening the 4 in 1 bucket up exposes the blade for scraping and pushing soil. And being able to close the bucket over an object gives the ability to grab.

Front end loaders can also be fitted with various attachments such as pallet tines (to turn your tractor into a forklift) and hay spike for shifting bales.

Front end loaders are available on tractors and bulldozers.

Back Hoes

Backhoes are purpose built for digging. This is ideal for digging trenches but also very handy for jobs such as removing tree stumps

One of the great features of this backhoe is it can be easily removed enabling a variety of other regular implements to be fitted.
