Tractor or Dozer?

Wheeled tractors have long been the popular choice with many farmers. Pneumatic tyres make for a more comfortable ride and a higher ground speed. This enables jobs such as slashing to be done more quickly.

They are also comparatively "kind" on the ground. The combination of the rolling tyre and conventional steering mean they cause minimal damage to the ground. Fitting of optional turf tyres even makes it possible to drive on firm lawns.

Virtually all tractors are fitted with a power take off and 3 point linkage enabling a large variety of implements to be fitted from slasher to rotary hoe to post hole digger.

With 4WD becoming more of a standard issue, tractors have improved significantly in the traction and stability stakes. Yet the greatest limitation of the wheeled tractor is its ability to negotiate particularly steep or slippery conditions.

In summary the wheeled tractor is a good all rounder. It can tackle all kinds of applications and is generally more suited to maintaining an established property.

The bulldozer shines in rugged terrain and is more suited to the earthmoving duties associated with establishing a property. The track system gives the dozer a huge footprint on the ground for maximum traction. Combined with the lower centre of gravity, the dozer is safer to operate in hilly country. This means it will get places a wheeled tractor simply won't go.

The extra traction also allows a dozer to cut and push a greater load of material without slipping as a tractor is inclined to do. This makes it more suited to building driveways, dams, shed sites etc. These projects can be done with a tractor / front end loader - it just takes longer.

Of course there are downsides. The lack of a pneumatic tyre makes for a bumpier and slower ride as there is no cushioning effect. The steel tracks are more likely to "rip up" soft ground - optional rubber tracks are available that are kinder on the ground.

Generally speaking dozers do not have a PTO or 3 point linkage so they have been pretty limited in the implements that can be fitted to them. The East Wind Farm Boss dozer is genuinely different because it has both. This gives "go anywhere" traction and the versatility of fitting all kinds of implements.
